Abbey Cook Brisbane Actor
April 26, 2022What’s the most interesting role you’ve had?
Definitely playing a graduating student in the soon-to-release film, Ticket to Paradise. I have never been a part of such a big project like that! I loved the costumes, sets, and the lifelong friends I met inset, people who I still keep in touch with today. Meeting George Clooney and Julia Roberts was also a surreal moment that I will take with me for the rest of my career!
What was your headshot session like?
It was so amazing! Having no experience with headshots before, I was a little apprehensive and nervous going into it. But Sheona made me feel so comfortable and I had so much fun playing with shots, faces, and outfits!
Where did you study?
After graduating in 2020, I studied Speech Pathology at UQ. It was after a semester of study that I knew I would be doing an injustice to myself if I didn’t pursue my love of acting. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama at QUT and I’m loving it! I am hoping to audition for the Acting course over the next year and really strengthen my work behind camera rather than on stage.
What’s the most interesting workshop you’ve attended?
I am currently partaking in Kristy Sexton’s 101 Intensive through Ben Parkinson Casting which has taught me so much about self-tapes and making an impression in auditions, which I have found extremely interesting! I love that Kristy and her team challenge me to take on new roles I wouldn’t normally play. I have also loved Bud Hopes Secret Sets Workshop as it allowed me to better understand the business side of acting, as well as the physical one.
Who is your agent?
Ego Management
Do you work in film, theatre, or both?
I have grown up doing theatre all my life but am currently working on my onscreen skills to focus on pursuing a career on camera.
What do you like about acting the most?
That I can make it my own! When I pick up a new script or character, I have the capacity to bring that to life and share that story in my own unique way which is a very special honor to have that requires a lot of trust from those around you.
When did you start acting? What got you started?
I was always that kid who put on shows for my family, dressed up in costumes, blasting high school musical in my room. Through my love of performing and my parents’ support, in Year 3, I began Speech and Drama lessons, where I completed 3 of my exams. I also started by joining Fame Theatre Company which allowed me to strengthen my acting, singing and dancing skills, individually. Although, it was in acting that I truly enjoyed myself the most! That passion has only continued to grow stronger as I have gotten older!
What is your strength as an actor?
I believe my wild imagination and empathy and my biggest strengths as an actor. In order to connect with a script and a character properly, to create a believable performance, connecting to the script is important. I believe my empathetic nature allows me to do this. Coinciding with my sometimes bizarre imagination, I love the creativity that comes with the performance process!
Describe your most challenging role to date and why was it challenging?
I am currently working on a play called ‘Uncovered’ which is being directed and produced by some fellow QUT students. Taking on the lead role of mother, Emily, I am finding it challenging to ensure I am portraying the role respectfully and realistically. Given that the play explores some very dark and emotional subjects which I have no experience with, it is important that I research thoroughly the contents of the play and draw from people’s personal stories to create a performance that correctly and respectfully portrays these experiences.
Who do you most admire?
My Grandpa, Jim Cook. His kind nature and dedication throughout his life proved to me that if you are a good person, you can achieve anything you put your mind to.
If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
Anything outside my comfort zone to push boundaries and my learning experience. My dream would be taking on a role based on a true story. I feel like there is such a strong element of trust that comes with embodying or being entrusted to tell the story of another person. Being entrusted with an honor like that would be surreal. I also LOVE Christmas and am that annoying person that plays Christmas music all year round so having the opportunity to stare in a Christmas-themed production would be absolutely magical.
